Biography

Over the past decades, Verebes has developed his painterly world through a succession of closely interconnected series. Sleeping Titans, Mudra and Soma Sema explore different states of the human figure, tracing transitions between presence and absence, the material and the spiritual, the visible and that which resists representation. The body appears by turns monumental and fragmented, at times almost dissolving into the pictorial space.

György Verebes was born in Senta in 1965. He graduated from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in Budapest. Since 2002, he has lived and worked at the Szolnok Artists’ Colony, where he has served as artistic director since 2003. Alongside his artistic practice, he has played an active role in shaping and representing contemporary painting in Hungary. He is President of the Hungarian Painting Day Foundation, a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts, and, since 2026, President of the Academy’s Kecskemét Regional Workshop.

Verebes has held more than seventy solo exhibitions and participated in nearly three hundred group exhibitions in Hungary and internationally. His work has received numerous professional distinctions and is represented in public and private collections in Hungary and abroad.
